The Băile Herculane resort is one of the oldest spa resorts in the world, with a documented history of over 1848 years. Located in the Cerna Valley, 5 km from the main road connecting the west of the country to Bucharest - D.N. 6 (E70) and the international railway Bucharest - Timișoara - Moravița, the resort is also accessible via the Danube waterway, either from the east: Sulina - Galați - Drobeta Turnu Severin - Orșova, or from the west: Vienna - Budapest - Belgrade - Orșova. The nearest airports are in Caransebeș and Timișoara (international airport).

The balneo-climatic resort of Băile Herculane is situated in the Cerna River valley at 165 m altitude.

The curative properties of the thermal waters here were discovered in Roman times, when the first baths were built in honor of the god Hercules.

The resort benefits from a temperate continental climate with Mediterranean influences; from the resort, excursions can be made to the ruins of the Roman baths, Peștera Hoților, Grota Haiducilor...

The Băile Herculane resort is integrated into the Valea Cernei-Domogled National Park and has a particularly picturesque position. Its attractive location on the fascinating Cerna Valley lies on the same parallel as Nice and Venice.

The origins of Băile Herculane span nearly two millennia. The documented attestation of the resort dates back to 153 AD, recorded on a votive tablet in the baths: "To the gods and divinities of the waters, Ulpius Secundinus, Marius Valens, Pomponius Haemus, Carus, Val, Valens, sent as Roman delegates to attend the election as consul of their former colleague Severianus, returning unharmed, raised this offering of gratitude..". During the Roman civilization, the resort in the Cerna Valley was an important attraction for the aristocracy of ancient Rome. Impressed by the exceptional healing power of the sacred waters of the Cerna Valley, the Romans who arrived in Dacia dedicated a true spa cult under the tutelary sign of Hercules.

Numerous vestiges remain from Roman times: aqueducts, baths, statues, coins, votive tablets raised as signs of gratitude to the gods for healing. After 1718 (Peace of Passarovitz), the modern and contemporary history of Băile Herculane begins within the Austrian Empire. From 1736, the reconstruction and modernization of the baths and access roads began; Banat border guards built most of the buildings in the resort here, bearing the imprint of impressive Austrian Baroque. The resort has been visited over time by great personalities, including: Emperor Joseph II, Emperor Francis I and Empress Charlotte, Emperor Franz Joseph and Empress Elisabeth. In 1852, the Emperor of Austria considered Băile Herculane "the most beautiful resort on the continent", and Empress Elisabeth - passionate, beloved, distinguished, and harmonious Sissi - wrote an intimate journal in which Băile Herculane are a distinct and delightful presence. The Nicolae Cena Museum is located in the resort, whose collections began to be formed starting in 1922.

The uninterrupted existence of two millennia of the Băile Herculane resort was favored by the miraculous efficacy of the thermal springs, but also by the picturesque location of the resort in a valley sheltered by mountains of particular beauty. The first-class technical and urban facilities at a high standard of comfort and the rich diversification of treatment methods from classical balneary cure to various physio and electrotherapy methods, massages, acupuncture, etc. have given this resort a high degree of attractiveness.

Multiple means of recreation and entertainment – restaurant, bars, summer terraces, swimming pools with thermal water, sauna, massage, billiards, etc. - as well as hiking and excursion opportunities in the resort and along the Cerna Valley, constitute an additional attraction for visitors to the spa town of Băile Herculane.
